10 things you may not know about Idaho (according to me)

10 things about Idaho

I’m really feeling the love for Idaho lately. This is partially because of the where I’m from blog swap I just participated in, and partially because I have relatives coming into town who are pumped to experience everything it has to offer (which they should be!)

I know I am biased, but I think I live in the greatest state out there. Sure it doesn’t boast any famous cities, tourist landmarks or even any wonders of the world, but it’s pretty great.

For the outdoorsman, everything is at your fingertips. Within an hour drive of my home town there is fishing, whitewater rafting, biking, hiking, hunting, skiing, camping and lakes to go boating. That being said, living in Idaho’s largest city, I’m not short on city-living luxuries like Target, Nordstrom Rack, Sephora and Café Rio.

I could go on and on and on about what makes Idaho great, but let’s get to that list I promised.

Here are 10 things you may not know about Idaho – according to yours truly.

1. Idaho is known for potatoes – duh. However, to find an Idaho potato in Idaho is tough, as we ship them out to you folks. AND although we are known for potatoes we are actually the leading onion producing state in the country.

2. Idaho is NOT Iowa, nor is I located in the Midwest. We border Washington, Oregon, Utah, Wyoming and Montana. You can drive about 10 hours from our western border and be at the Pacific coast. We even have a “seaport” that can be accessed by river in Lewiston, Idaho.

3. There are almost twice as many cows in Idaho as there are people.

4. Not everyone in Idaho is a farmer and we all have running water and electricity – unless we choose to go without so that we can camp, drink beer and have bonfires.

5. Rigby, Idaho is the birthplace of television (you’re welcome).

6. Idaho has 3,100 miles of rivers - more than any other state, we also have the deepest river gorge and the tallest sand dune. Thus the awesome outdoorsness…

7. In Idaho it is against the law to give someone a box of chocolate weighing over 50 lbs, fish from the back of a camel, or ride a merry-go-round on a Sunday.

8. The world's first alpine skiing chairlift was (and still is) located in Sun Valley, Idaho. Idaho is also home the world’s first nuclear power plant in Arco.

9. The Gem State has a blossoming craft brewing industry, and has some of the finest beers around (I’m probably a little biased as a beer drinker).

10. Idaho is the best place to grow up in ever. It has a small town feel, low cost of living and endless outdoor exploration opportunities. You can feel safe going on a jog at 11 PM, can go without locking your doors and Idaho has all 4 seasons to enjoy (hot summers, crunchy leafed falls, snowy winters and glorious springs). Plus I grew up here, so its obviously awesome.
