21 Years

Twenty-one years ago today, my sister was born.

I was six years old and I still remember that day. I had stayed with my grandparents the night before. I'm not sure exactly why, but most likely because my parents were certain she'd be making her debut soon.

I remember visiting my mother at the hospital and hearing the story. They had gone to breakfast at McDonald's (where was my invite?) and my mom had gone into labor there. I remember that she had to walk around the hospital to help "speed things up."

We didn't stay at the hospital long and I don't remember exactly what I spent the rest of the day doing other than counting down the seconds till she arrived.

Then that moment came. I do remember this part perfectly. My grandma and I were in the bed I always stayed in at their house. I was all ready for bed and tucked in. She was reading me Bambi when the phone rang. The phone call we had waited for all evening. When my grandma handed me the phone I remember hearing a baby crying in the background.

My dad's voice on the phone told me, "Do you hear that? That's your baby sister."

Twenty-one years later and there are hundreds of memories with her I could share, tons of wisdom I'd like to enlighten her with as she reaches this milestone, and millions of moments I'm so glad I've gotten to spend with her.

I'm looking forward to spending some more of those moments and creating more of those memories with her for her birthday this weekend.

Happy birthday Lise, cheers to 21!

  4. Sisters are a special gift. If you're like me you didn't full understand it or appreciate it until adulthood.
